Connect. Heal. Grow. - Emily Newcomer, MEd, LPC

Helping individuals
create a mosaic from the pieces of their lives
through connection,
healing, and growth.

Durango, CO starting September 2011.

Welcome
I am honored to be considered as a person to join you on your healing journey.  Ultimately, you are the expert on your life and I am here to help facilitate and guide your process through what you may be experiencing.  I have hope that together we can help move you from where you find yourself today to a place where you are living life more fully.

Offering individualized and collaborative psychotherapy for adults and adolescents dealing with a variety of issues, my areas of specialization include:

Sexual Assault and Abuse, Disordered Eating,
Trauma, Grief and Loss, Life Transitions, Growth Work

Individual Psychotherapy

"Emily is a gifted and intuitive therapist who leads with authenticity in her work.  She brings warmth and a deep understanding of humanness to her therapy sessions.  I am always confident in the quality of her work when I refer someone to her."
~Ruby Jo Walker, LCSW

Integrating a variety of approaches, I utilize the most appropriate therapy for the individual and the situation and believe in the healing aspect of an authentic therapy relationship.  My leaning towards Mindfulness and Body-Centered Psychotherapy (I plan to be trained in the Hakomi Method starting Fall 2011) can help bring deeper awareness and integration.  Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy is also an approach I utilize when appropriate.  I am trained in EMDR trauma therapy, which has much success in building and supporting a person's internal resources and reducing the intensity of feeling trauma often causes.  It is very important to me to recognize how gender, power and cultural oppression affect a person in all aspects of life.  I believe it is not only safe but also very relevant to bring these issues into the therapeutic process.

Support Groups

"After being resistant to group therapy for many years, I decided to give it a chance. It ended up being the most instrumental step in my recovery. The group dealt with life issues that all women share, regardless of the reasons they end up in treatment. Several 'ah-ha' moments in group actually 'unstuck' some longstanding beliefs and freed me to truly take a new path."
~previous group member, Durango, CO

Support groups are often a large part of the healing process for an individual.  Connecting with others who are going through something similar to you, knowing that you are not alone, and seeing your experience through someone else's eyes can be powerful. Everyone will be at a different place in their therapeutic journey and that can provide hope for you and your own journey. To provide this amazing opportunity of growth, I facilitate the following support groups in the Durango area.

Sexual Trauma Survivors Support Groups

Two groups are offered alternatively throughout the year for women:
Adult Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse &
Adult Survivors of Teen/Adult Sexual Assault

Male Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse & Sexual Assault  group to start in 2011. Day of the week to be announced.

These support groups are sponsored by Sexual Assault Services Organization (SASO), a local non-profit serving survivors and working to prevent sexual violence in Southwest Colorado for over 30 years.  Ruby Jo Walker, LCSW, a highly respected therapist in the Durango area for over 25 years, facilitates the Childhood Abuse Group while I facilitate the other group for women and the male survivor group.  With a focus on mindfulness, and themes such as safety, trust of self, grief and loss, managing strong emotions and sexuality and intimacy this group has proved to be a powerful connecting force for those who have been subjected to sexual trauma.
